WHAT IS LUMPY SKIN DISEASE?
Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) is a viral disease that affects cattle, and can lead to severe health issues and economic losses. Successful control and eradication of LSD relies on early detection of disease, followed by a rapid and widespread vaccination campaign.
STOP LSD!
LSD have severe clinical signs that includes visible noodles on the skin, fever, temporary reduction in milk production, temporary or permanent sterility in bulls, abortion in cows, and occasionally death.
WAYS OF TRANSMISSION
LSD spreads primarily through blood sucking
insects like certain species of flies, mosquitoes, and
ticks, which act as vectors for the virus.
It is crucial to promptly report to your veterinarian
any changes in the health and production of your cattle.
WHAT ARE THE CLINICAL SIGNS OF THE DISEASE?
HOW CAN YOU PROTECT YOUR ANIMALS?
After infection, clinical signs vary:
• High fever, weakness, loss of appetite.
• One or more painful, firm nodules on the skin, nose, mouth or body - as the disease progresses these nodules may crust over or necrose, increasing the risk of secondary infection.
• Enlarged lymph nodes.
• Death (in rare cases).
• Abortions in cows and sterility in bulls.
• Yellowish-grey lesions (skin damage) on the tongue.
• Drop in milk production in dairy cattle.
• Maintain good hygiene by regular cleaning and disinfection.
• Use repellents on regular basis to protect your animals.
• Clean and disinfect the objects on regular basis.
• Buy animals from registered and approved sources, accompanied by proper health certificate.
• Identification and registration of animals on your farm with controlled movement, as prescribed by Law.
• Immediately notify the Veterinary Authorities if you notice any unusual clinical signs.
